ONE SESSION WORKSHOPS

Fused Glass Sampler
Course Fee: $50

Class size limit: 9
This beginner course is the best way to enjoy the excitement of crafting cold glass while making your very own piece. Students will be introduced to the art of flat glass and kiln forming. You will experience cutting glass, arranging colors and shapes, and finish with beautiful fused pendants. The course is intended to introduce flat glasswork to the student for further consideration.

Fused Glass Pendants
Course Fee: $150

Class size limit: 10
This class will introduce you to the basic principals behind forming glass in the kiln to create beautiful fused glass pendants. You will be introduced to all of the tools, basic glass cutting and kiln forming theory. When these one of a kind pieces come out of the kiln a Diablo staff member will attach a sterling silver bail by which to hang your pieces. No experience necessary.

Glass Judaica Class: Menorahs, Seder and Challah Plates
Course Fee: $150

Class size limit: 10
Fused glass Menorahs, Seder and Challah plates make great presents and family air looms, which will be treasured for years to come. This introductory class will cover kiln forming theory, color application and a discussion about how Judaic artists have been using kiln formed glass to create these traditional forms. Using precut elements, you will assemble a piece of glass to be fused and then slumped into your chosen form: a Menorah, Seder or Challah plate. Your pieces will be ready to be picked up one week after the class.

Quick n Easy Fused Glass Clock
Course Fee: $100

Class size limit: 10
In this three hours workshop students will create a one of a kind fused glass piece that will be assembled into a clock. Using clear glass, color scraps, frits, and stringers students will explore the medium of fused glass. Each student will complete a few small pieces to get their creative juices flowing followed by one larger pieces to be made into a clock. After the piece has been fired, a few days after the class, Diablo staff will drill a hole in the center of the piece and install the clock parts. Students will return one week later to pick up their fully assembled fused glass clock (shipping options available)!

TWO SESSION WORKSHOPS

One-day or Two-day Course
Course Fee: $150 one-day or $250 two-day


Class size limit: 9
This course will introduce you to the process of applying photographic quality images to glass. You may choose to take a one or two day class.

Day one (3 Hours): You will learn how to transfer an image to resist and then to flat glass. The glass can be sand blasted and paradise paints can be applied. Examples of imagery can include logos, text, hand drawn imagery, or even old family photographs.

Day two (3 hours): The flat glass pieces from Day 1 can be Picked up and blown out into vessels in the hot shop. If the student has no experience in blowing the teacher or the assistant will do the process and make the vessel to the students needs.

Fused Glass 101
Course Fee: $290

In this two-day workshop, using colorful pieces of glass, including glass powders and frits, students will learn to design several necklace pendants, coasters, ornaments, sun catchers, tiles and a fused and slumped plate or bowl. This class will introduce you to the basic principles behind forming glass in the kiln to create beautiful fused glass pieces. You will be introduced to all of the tools, basic glass cutting and kiln forming theory, as well as tack-fusing. No experience necessary.

Fused Glass 202
Course Fee: $290
Prerequisite: Fused Glass 101 or previous experience.

Class size limit: 9
This class is for the experienced fuser who is looking to get their hands into the kiln. There will be a series of exercises, which will require high temperatures and hands on manipulation. Color bars and drop through will be covered to create one of a kind glass pieces. These colorful elements will then be included in a series of fused and slumped pieces. The goal is to leave with pieces that share a visual language through form and color. Materials included. Extra glass available for sale.

Dinner Ware: Plate Making
Course Fee: $260

This introduction to kiln forming guides students through the process of creating the most traditional fused glass form: the plate. Students will learn basic kiln forming theory, design and color applications. During day two, basic cutting techniques will be covered such as straight lines and curves. No experience necessary.

Fusing with Iridescent Glass & Decorative Etching
Course Fee: $150

Class size limit: 8
In this exciting new class you will learn the basics of three glass techniques: fusing, glass etching (sandblasting) and slumping. Create a bowl or a plate made with iridescent glass, decorated with sandblasting etching. First, students will create a fused piece with iridescent glass. Then they will apply a resist onto the piece and cut out a design. Followed by sandblasting the glass piece. Lastly, they will remove the resist and slump the glass on a mold to fire-polish the surface and shape it into a three dimensional object.

THREE SESSION WORKSHOPS

Seeing Clearly
Course Fee: $200

Class size limit: 9
This three week class will take you on a focused journey where clear glass will be highlighted. Students will explore the effects of clear frit, powders,stringer and scrap in combination with color to add texture, depth and optic illusions to small scale exploratory pieces. These pieces will serve as "sketches" as students work towards a larger scale final project. No previous experience necessary.

FOUR SESSION WORKSHOPS

Kiln Forming 1: Fusing and Slumping
Course Fee: $260

Class size limit: 9
This four-week class is an excellent overview to the world of kiln formed glass. Kiln forming is a process by which glass is assembled, put into a kiln, and heated in a controlled manner to achieve a wide range of effects. There will be discussions about kiln forming theory, color theory, design and pattern. You will learn how to cut straight lines, curves, and circles. The exercises will cover kiln carving, fusing, slumping and some painterly effects. You will have many study pieces and two finished pieces, which will bring the techniques you learned together. Demonstrations and class discussions will alternate with plenty of hands-on work time.

NOTE: During October and November, these classes will run from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. No experience necessary.

Kiln Forming 2: Getting into the Kiln
Course Fee: $335

This class is for the experienced fuser who is looking to learn about what's happening in the kiln. Pattern bars, drop throughs and kiln-carving will be covered to create elements for future fusing that exhibit the effects of high temperatures on the glass. This workshop also includes in-depth discussions of kiln firing schedules and prepares students for developing firing schedules for their own projects. Materials included. Extra glass available for sale.

Kiln Forming 3
Course Fee: $335

Class size limit: 10
This class will pick up where the last class left off; allowing students to hone their skills as a fuser. Again we will be working with high temperatures and hands on manipulation. Advanced pot melts and racking will be covered to create your unique pieces.

SIX SESSION WORKSHOPS

Fused Glass for Painters
Course Fee: $300

Class size limit: 10
Students will bring a painting of their own to the first class which will be used as the inspiration for an exploratory adventure in fused glass using traditional and non traditional techniques. The first four weeks of this six-week course students will explore various effects that can be used to mimic or reproduce aspects of the painting they bring to the first class. The last two weeks students will use their experiments to put together a final piece that reflects the painting they brought to the first class. Ample materials are included in the price of the course to complete the projects, however, students may find it appropriate to purchase alternate materials to play with in order to achieve colors or effects that exceed the available materials. There will be an opportunity to put together a group order for the class if multiple students are interested in additional materials. No prior glass experience required, open to all levels.

Jewelry (Fused Glass and Metal)
Course Fee: $398.50

Class size limit: 9
This 9 sessions class is a joint program between Diablo/Boston Glass School and the Brookline Arts Center! Learn to make spectacular finished pendants, earrings, bracelets and brooches with fused glass and set in unique settings of your own design. Your teachers will introduce you to the fundamentals of glass fusing, and guide you to shape, polish, solder and set your pieces in copper or other non-precious metals. Basic materials provided. Silver may be ordered by the student for their own use.
