ONE DAY WORKSHOPS

Fused Glass Sampler
Course Fee: $50

Class size limit: 9
This course will introduce flat glass and kiln forming. This beginner class is the best way to enjoy the excitement of crafting cold glass while making your very own piece. You will experience cutting glass, arranging colors and shapes, and finish with fused pendants. The course is intended to briefly introduce flat glass work to the student for further consideration.

This class will introduce you to the basic principles behind forming glass in the kiln to create beautiful fused glass pendants. You will be introduced to all of the tools, basic glass cutting and kiln forming theory. You will learn different design and color skills to help inform your decisions on how to layer your glass before it is fired. We will introduce you to iridized and dicroic glass to create an electrifying design element in your pendants. When these one of a kind pieces come out of the kiln a Diablo staff member will attach a sterling silver bail by which to hang you pieces.

Glass Judaica Class: Menorahs, Seder and Challah Plates

Fused glass Menorahs, Seder and Challah plates make great presents and family air looms, which will be treasured for years to come. This introductory class will discuss kiln forming theory, color application and a discussion about how Judaic artists have been using kiln formed glass to create these traditional forms. Using precut elements, you will assemble a piece of glass to be fused and then slumped into your chosen form: a Menorah, Seder or Challah plate. Your pieces will be ready to be picked up one week after the class.

TWO DAY WORKSHOPS

Images in Glass
One-day or Two-day Course
Course Fee: $150 one-day or $250 two-day

This course will introduce you to the process of applying photographic quality images to glass. You may choose to take a one or two-day class.

Day one (3 Hours): Learn how to etch your favorite photographs, drawings, company logos, or text into glass. In this three hour course you will learn, beginning with the image of your choice, how to develop a photosensitive sand blast resist, prepare your surface, and use a sandblaster to permanently etch your image in glass. The final step of this process involves fusing a low fire enamel into your prepared image leaving you the final product of an image encapsulated in glass.

Day two (3 hours): The second day of the images in glass course offers you another step to the images in glass process. For this session you will learn how to take the image prepared on day one and attach it using the glass blowing process. The final product for this step is the encapsulated image placed on the surface of a hand blown glass vessel or sculpted object.

Fused Glass 101

In this two-day workshop, using colorful pieces of glass, including glass powders and frits, students will learn to design several necklace pendants, coasters, ornaments, sun catchers, tiles and a fused and slumped plate or bowl. This class will introduce you to the basic principles behind forming glass in the kiln to create beautiful fused glass pieces. You will be introduced to all of the tools, basic glass cutting and kiln forming theory, as well as tack-fusing.

This class is for the experienced fuser who is looking to get their hands into the kiln. There will be a series of exercises, which will require high temperatures and hands on manipulation. Vitrograph, color bars, and drop through, will be covered, to create one of a kind glass pieces. These colorful elements will then be included in a series of fused and slumped pieces. The goal is to leave with pieces that share a visual language through form and color.

This introduction to kiln forming guides students through the process of creating the most traditional fused glass form, the plate. Student will learn basic kiln forming theory, design and color applications. You will be provided with precut glass elements to assemble into your first plate. We will discuss kiln programming and put your pieces into the kiln be fired. Day two will cover basic cutting techniques such as straight lines and curves. After that, you will be free to apply those techniques to your final plate. Your pieces will be ready one week after the class.

Fusing with Iridescent Glass & Decorative Etching
Course Fee: $150

Class size limit: 9
In this exciting new class you’ll learn the basics of 3 glass techniques: fusing, glass etching (sandblasting) and slumping. Create a bowl or a plate made with iridescent glass, decorated with sandblasting etching. First you will create a fused piece with iridescent glass, then after applying a resist onto the piece with a cut out design, you will sandblast the glass to achieve your design. After removing the resist, pieces will be slumped on a mold and fire-polished.

FOUR SESSION WORKSHOPS

Slumping Outside the Mold

This workshop is for students familiar with fusing who want to experiment with the natural qualities of glass within the kiln. It will be a crash course in understanding gravity and learning to anticipate the behavior of glass as it ascends in temperature. Emphasis will be placed on working outside of store bought molds and exploiting the natural flow of glass using a variety of techniques and materials. We will explore the use of metal armatures and other metal components to shape slumping. Form will be stressed over color and surface work.

Custom Interior Design

Through this course, students will have the unique opportunity to design and create beautiful and engaging accents for their home. Each student will design and create work that is custom made for any part of their home. Possible projects include, but certainly aren't limited to: kitchen or bathroom accent tiles, window panes, light fixtures and sconces, mirrors, clocks, fruit bowls, wall art, and centerpieces.

This four-week class in an excellent overview to the world of kiln formed glass. Kiln forming is a process by which glass is assembled, put into a kiln, and heated in a controlled manner to achieve a wide range of effects. There will be discussions about kiln forming theory, color theory, design and pattern. You will learn how to cut straight lines, curves, and circles. The exercises will cover kiln carving, fusing, slumping and some painterly effects. You will have many study pieces and two finished pieces, which will bring the techniques you learned together.

This class is an extension on the Fused Glass Pendants class designed for anyone who wants to learn the basics of fused glass and sterling silver jewelry techniques. The focus is on fused glass cabachors and the various ways to hang them; including setting them on sterling silver pendants and one ring. Each student will be given a kit including all the sterling silver elements needed to complete the class projects.
