Come on in and get a taste of the ancient art of glassblowing. This sampler class is the best way to enjoy the excitement of working with molten glass while making your very own souvenir. You will learn how to gather glass from the furnace, and then control and shape it. Our experienced teachers will help you make a colorful paperweight for you to exhibit as your trophy.

The glass paperweight is the first step for anyone interested in working with hot glass. This introductory class guides the first time glass artist through the most crucial skills. In a fun and informative manner, our experienced instructors will introduce you to tools, safety and basic glass theory. You will learn how to gather glass from the furnace, then how to shape and control it, and how to apply color to the glass. Every student will leave with a gorgeous handmade paperweight and a strong foundation for future exploration.

Swedish Bowl

The Swedish Bowl is similar to the glass paperweight but students will be working with a blowpipe to add a hollow to their piece and then allowing the bubble to collapse creating a bowl shape in the center. This introductory class guides the first time glass artist through the most crucial skills. Students will learn how to gather glass from the furnace, how to shape and control, and how to apply color. In a fun and informative manner our instructors will introduce you to tools, safety and basic glass theory. Every student will leave with a gorgeous funky glass bowl and a strong foundation for future exploration. No experience necessary. All materials included.

TWO DAY WORKSHOPS

Glassblowing 101: Make your own Drinking Glass
Course Fee: $325

Class size limit: 9
This two-day introduction to glassblowing will guide the first time student and students looking to brush-up on their skills, through the fundamentals of gathering glass from the furnace, vocabulary, tools, and safety. You will start with Diablo's core exercises: the paperweight. Then the class will be introduced to the blown bubble through a series of demonstrations and hands-on exercises. Students will then apply the color and blowing techniques learned to create their very own colorful drinking glass.

FOUR SESSION WORKSHOPS

Glassblowing 1: Basics and Fundamentals
Course Fee: $500

Class size limit: 9
This four-week introductory course will guide students through a series of fundamental skills, which are crucial to working in the hot shop. First, you will learn Diablo's core exercise: the paperweight. After the paperweight exercises teaches you how to gather, form and control glass, you will be introduced to the blown bubble. With these fundamentals skills you will learn how to make beautiful glasses and small vessels.

Times: Monday to Thursday 9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm

This intensive course will take students through a series of fundamental skills, which are crucial to working in the hot shop. While beginner students will be learning how to gather, form and control glass, and blow bubbles to make glasses and small vessels, intermediate student will be implementing Swedish and Venetian glass blowing techniques to create larger pieces with a variety of color applications, body wraps and raking. More advanced students will be learning variety of new techniques while improving their skill and solidifying the acquired knowledge.

Important notes about the hot shop: To work safely in the Hot Shop you must wear closed-toed sneakers or shoes. Please do not wear sandals, flip flops, heels, shorts or skirts and only cotton clothing is allowed. Remember: Polyester melts... and that's no fun!!!
